California under tsunami advisory, officials ask people to stay off beaches, out of harbors

After a massive earthquake in Chile the California coastline is under a tsunami advisory. See SFGate for updated details.

The advisory issued for California is the lowest level of tsunami alert. By contrast Hawaii has been issued a tsunami warning, the highest level of alert.

The effects of the tsunami, with waves predicted at two to three feet, are expected to reach the coastside shortly about 1:20 pm today. Strong currents might continue for several hours afterwards.

The West Coast Alaska Tsunami Center, part of NOAA, is responsible for advisories and warnings for our area. Their site is at http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov. (The site is slow to respond at this time).
