PESCADERO, Calif. – Remember when a bookmobile was a van stuffed with books? In a sign that those days are long gone, San Mateo County Library’s newest bookmobile is a 35-foot-long bus with computer workstations, solar panels and an awning for outdoor café seating.
The public is invited to celebrate the arrival of the new library-on-wheels this Saturday, March 5, at 3 p.m. at Pescadero Elementary School, 620 N. St., Pescadero. San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President Carole Groom and Supervisor Don Horsley will lead the celebration that will include music, crafts, story time and light refreshments.
Library officials expect the new bookmobile will travel 5,500 miles a year and loan out more than 40,000 items. The bookmobile can holds thousands of books, magazines and other materials for everyone from young children to older adults in English and Spanish.
Bench seating, wheelchair access and wireless connectivity will make a visit to the bookmobile as comfortable and as rewarding as a trip to the library.
