The Montara Fog Concise Guide to Local Government Agencies

Last revision: September 5, 2012

The Coastside has a somewhat bewildering number of government entities. Here are the key ones with links to their sites:

San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. Has overall responsibility for San Mateo County and direct responsibility for the unincorporated part of the Coastside. Our area is part of District 3, although the elections for seats on the board are district-wide–all county voters get a say in who represents District 3. Our current supervisor is Don Horsley.

San Mateo County Board of Supervisors

Half Moon Bay City Council. Governs HMB but in fact farms out almost all of its functions. Schools, fire and emergency, and water and sewage are handled by their own independent districts. Police services were recently contracted out to the Sheriff’s Office. Parks and Recreation are now handled by the City of San Carlos.

Sheriff’s Office:  North Coast Substation

Parks and Rec: RecConnect at San Carlos

Cabrillo Unified School District (CUSD). Controls the six public schools and the largest budget of any coastside government body.

Cabrillo Unified School District: Governing Board

Coastside Fire Protection District (CFPD). A fire department which, like most fire departments nowadays, serves as an emergency medical service. Operations performed under contract by Cal Fire.

Coastside Fire Protection District: Board of Directors

San Mateo County Harbor District. A county-wide district that controls Princeton Harbor (as well as Oyster Point). Most Coastsiders have no idea it exists. Its meetings are not videotaped. I think the Commissioners like it that way.

Midcoast Community Council (MCC). An advisory body to the Board of Supervisors, concerned with matters related to the unincorporated part of the coast north of HMB. They have a spiffy new web page.

Water and sewer services

Montara Water and Sanitary District (MWSD). Purchased by the community from a private (foreign, corporate) owner. Supplies water and sewer services to Montara and Moss Beach.

Coastside Community Water District (CCWD). Supplies water, but not sewer, to Half Moon bay and El Granada.

Granada Sanitary District (GSD). Supplies sewer but not water to El Granada. Also serves the northern part of Half Moon Bay. (Half Moon Bay handles the rest on its own.)

Sewer Authority Mid-Coastside (SAM).  An entity created to share the wastewater treatment plant among the various sewer districts.  Overseen by mix of elected officials from HMB,, GSD, and MWSD.
